Elementary School Curriculum (Grades K–5)

The primary goal of elementary school is to provide foundational skills in core subjects, supported by an engaging introduction to arts, health, and social studies.

Core Subjects

English Language Arts

Students develop phonemic awareness, phonics, and handwriting skills. This progresses to reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing sentences and stories, and understanding basic grammar and literary concepts.

Mathematics

Foundational math is introduced through interactive activities. Concepts include counting, number recognition, basic addition and subtraction, two- and three-dimensional shapes, and understanding quantities.

Science

Students learn about the natural world through observation and simple experiments. Topics include basic concepts related to weather, seasons, animal life, and plant life.

Social Studies

Students are introduced to their place in the world by learning about their families, communities, and national holidays. This progresses to introductory history and geography.

Physical Education

Introduction to organized games, simple exercises, and good health habits.

Middle School Curriculum (Grades 6–8)

Middle school builds on elementary foundations, offering more rigorous academic material across a more specialized set of subjects. Core subjects become more complex, and students begin to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Core Subjects

English Language Arts

Challenging texts, figurative language, multi-paragraph research papers, and critical literary analysis

Mathematics

Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, algebraic expressions, linear equations, and data analysis

Science

Earth science, life science (biology), and physical science (chemistry and physics)

Social Studies

Geography, history, civics, and economics with inquiry-based approaches

Other Subjects

World Languages

Many schools introduce the study of a foreign language.

Electives

CTE, fine arts, and courses for exploring personal interests

High School Curriculum (Grades 9–12)

High school curriculum is designed to prepare students for college, careers, and citizenship. It includes state-mandated core requirements and a wider range of elective courses. Many core subjects are offered in various levels, including comprehensive, honors, and Advanced Placement (AP).

Core Subject Requirements

English Language Arts (4 credits)

American, British, and world literature with critical reading, research, and focused essays

Mathematics (4 credits)

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and pre-calculus or calculus. Many states also allow computer science to substitute for certain math credits.

Science (3 credits)

Biology, chemistry or physics, and a third lab course

Social Studies (3 credits)

U.S. history/geography, world history/geography, government/civics, and economics

Other Graduation Requirements

World Language (2 credits)

Required in many states, though often waivable under certain conditions.

Fine Arts (1 credit)

Visual arts course requirement

Physical Education (1-1.5 credits)

Course focusing on physical wellness

Personal Finance (0.5 credit)

A growing requirement in many states, sometimes fulfillable through other programs.

Electives (3+ credits)

A number of additional elective credits, often with a focus area in fine arts, economic, humanities, CTE, or STEM.
